Shed Planning Tips

An outdoor shed is considered an accessory structure in the Amberley Village zoning code. These buildings are highly regulated for many reasons. Imagine what type of structure a neighbor might build without any controls?

First, you cannot put a shed in the front yard of your home. Sheds are only allowed in side yards and in the rear of your home. But if you decide to place a shed on the side of your home, you have to pay very close attention to the distance away from the lot line. This is covered in great detail in the Amberley Village Zoning Code Section 154.

The main access door of the shed is not allowed to face the street. This is an aesthetic issue in case someone leaves open a shed door and it is really messy inside.

You can build a large shed, but it cannot cover more than 30 percent of the area of your required rear yard and cannot exceed 1,000 square feet.

If you have a corner lot, the shed cannot project beyond the front yard line on either street.

If you have an empty lot, you cannot begin construction of your shed until 50 percent of the principal building has been completed.
