AMBERLEY BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING summary

Meeting Date:

January 9, 2008
7:30-9:00 PM; Amberley Village Community Room

Present:

Merrie Stillpass;Bernie Boraten; Steve Rasfeld; Jim Kelly; Jane Murphy; Pam Hessler


Discussion:

1. Welcome

2. In preparation of Arbor Day celebration 2008 in Amberley will be held MAY 4 (Actual OH date 4/25) Activities to include the purpose of the meeting is to discuss Master Planning of Village Hall grounds to coordinate long-term project improvements including:

a. Arbor Day activities 2008: 
Arbor Day Proclamation
Ceremonial Planting & work on Rain Garden 
  1. determine tree type & location
  2. rain garden plantings
  3. rain barrel garden planting behind maintenance shed
Kick-off announcement of Beautification Awards 2008 Program
Distribute Beautification Award signs to 2007 winners
Garden maintenance projects
“door prizes” –gator bags, protective tree ring, hi quality loppers, soaker hose, velco pruner—distinguish between AV residents & others

b. Rain Garden: JFNew an environmental resource company came out in December with CDS, the Village Engineer. JFNew is working on a plan that will create a rain garden that is both attractive and functional and that AVBC/staff can install. This should be available to review in early Feb.

Discussion of HCSWD Mini-Grant RFP—Funds seem attainable for educational signage if we can develop partnerships and attain 501-c3 http://www.hamilton-co.org/stormwater/communications.htm

c. Slab garden: Funds in the 2008 budget were approved for this. Merrie will invite landscape architect Sharon Floro, the Beautification Award judge, to the next AVBC meeting to review the previous plans from 2004 to move the process forward with modifications or redesign.

d. Areas of future improvement/master plan: develop overall concept plan for future installations. 

Look at track (upper & lower) as learning experiences.
Explore possibilities of creating different “environments” or learning gardens such as a scented garden, butterfly garden, children’s garden, shade garden, shrubs and flowering bushes. 
Look at replacing parking lot bumpers with something more aesthetic.
Keep imagery of theme in mind
